Far West Region Flood Update - Tuesday 21 February

The NSW State Emergency Service continues supporting communities in the far west of the state to manage extensive rural flooding. Floodwaters moving down from Queensland and the upper Barwon River are impacting several major river systems and communities across the region are being urged to prepare for the effects.

Approximately 250 Goodooga residents remain isolated as they wait for the Birrie and Bokhara Rivers to recede. Both rivers peaked on Sunday 19 February 2012 slightly lower than expected, with the Birrie at 5.17m and the Bokhara at 4.28m. The NSW SES is working with the community to maintain supplies and protect lives and property.

The flood peak is now approaching Weilmoringle and Brewarrina. The Culgoa River at Weilmoringle is expected to peak at around 6.1m over the coming days. An evacuation order remains in place at Weilmoringle Reserve affecting approximately 70 people. Current predictions warn of serious threats to the levy. The power has been disconnected and will remain so until the threat subsides.

The Barwon River at Brewarrina is expected to peak at 10.2m on Wednesday 22 February 2012 with major flooding creating extended periods of isolation over the coming weeks. The community and local businesses are advised to stock up on all essential items and to prepare homes and properties.

The Darling River at Bourke is currently expected to exceed the major flood level with a predicted peak of 13.9m around the first of March.

An evacuation warning has been issued for Alice Edwards Reserve with a decision to be made this week as to when the community will be ordered to evacuate.

General Flood Safety Advice

Floodwater can be deeper and faster flowing than it appears. It is often dirty, contaminated and contains hidden snags and debris.

  • NEVER drive, ride or walk through floodwater – this is the main cause of death when flooding occurs.
  • Listen to local radio for updates and advice.
