Cobb Highway good condition

Good morning all,

And we thought it couldn’t get any colder! Perhaps travelling in a nice warm car is the best way to handle things.

Have done a quick trip myself this week, and there is certainly still quite a few travellers on the road. Road trains of hay have given way to caravans and 4WD travellers.

Since there are really no actual events on in any of the towns, it’s a case of find the attractions that each town has to offer, and there is always something. I can’t go through the highlights of each of them, but can guarantee you, if you stop off and have a yarn to any local, they will come up with a host of things you can do and see to fill in the day.

They tell me the Cobb highway is in really good condition at the moment and the bitumen is stretching further and further. Soon will be a completed task.

Well done also to the Sunset Strip Progress Association, they have secured a grant in excess of $300,000- to better their little community, well done Barry and team.

Also heard today there’s a bit of a rise in our river, maybe that means a fish or two that can be caught. Not that I know a thing about fishing.

Again, if I can be of any help to any of you, please give me a ring, have had more and more calls lately and it’s great to be able to be of assistance, and you are all more than welcome in all our towns out here.

Uncertain weather ahead, job vacancy

Good morning once again to you all,

My weather forecast for the week in a nut shell is ‘predictably unpredictable’.

Have received quite a few phone calls from people who are intending to explore our great outback and really good to be able to put them on the right track. Unfortunately the odd call asking if they are allowed to stop in Wilcannia.

You are probably sick of me outlining all the places of interest we have for you out in the area, so I’ll be brief today.

Now we have just received word that if the planets all line up, we will have a regular tourist coach coming out from Sydney to take in Cobar, Wilcannia, White Cliffs, Broken Hill, and I’m trying to include Menindee in the plan. This hopefully will be an on going idea and will show case our area first hand to many of the coastal people who seem to have realised there’s a lot of their own country they haven’t seen yet. How good is that!

Which doesn’t mean of course that our caravaners and car travellers aren’t just as important. So please drop in, plenty of parking in the main Street to garb yourself a coffee and a town brochure. Have a little tour round and say hi.

More research reeded on my part to gather some events me thinks. Let’s know if you have anything happening or if I can pop some brochures in the mail for you.

Oh and by the way, if you know of a young person (or older if you like) who would like a job behind the bar in a top town! Accommodation supplied! Call me!!

Rain, check dirt road status

Good morning to you all,

It looks like ‘Huie’ has stepped in and dictated the week for us. Wide spread rain over almost all of our vast great area out this way has left you all to stick to the ‘black’ line as all the dirt roads are and will be out for I would say most of the week.

Now, having said that, it’s not the end of the world by any means. Yes, I know you can’t toodle up and down the river, that’s a no go. But what’s wrong with a leisurely trip from say Wentworth up to the fabulous Tibooburra or vice versa? and all the stopping points along the way. This includes Broken Hill, where you duck off to the side and have a look at Menindee, slip out to Silverton, and Mt. Gipps, and on up to Tibooburra, all on the bitumen.

But wait that’s not all. If you’re coming from “the inside country” you have Nyngan, 2 days there no trouble. Up and back to Bourke, (on bitumen), there’s 2 or 3 days gone. On to Cobar, at least a day or 2 there. Coffee at Emmdale and you’re here with us. So up and back to White Cliffs, (bitumen!) a tour there with Rob, dinner here at the Golf club in Wilcannia, a quick yarn to Jo at Topar and you’ll need a few days to get over it all in The Hill.

On a more serious note, please be careful on dirt roads this week, if there’s any doubt DON’T go on them. If you get stuck, remember someone has to go and rescue you and someone else has to repair the road. I know you will respect that. Don’t forget also, only Telstra NextG with the blue tick work out in this area. Don’t get caught out.

Which brings to point another mind, make sure you listen to our fabulous radio stations out in our back country. We have everything you need to know and listen to on our  ABC stations, 999 Broken Hill,  1584 Wilcannia and 657 Dubbo. We have the truly outback Bourke 2WEB on 585. Wilcannia River Radio on FM 103.1, Broken Hill 2 Dry FM on 107.7, and Broken Hill’s own 2BH on 567.

Popular Darling river Run, quite a few travelling

Good morning all,

Sorry about last week, we arrived at a motel at Blayney at 7PM last Sunday night. It was just not on the agenda!

We are in no mans land more so than ever it seems. Whilst things are really serious down south of the border, there are still quite a few travelling round our state and it appears doing the right thing. We have seen quite significant numbers whilst we were travelling round our kids last week and through the town here as well.

For those of you who are out and about to get away from it all, can I suggest we have some very good trips to offer out in our neck of the woods here.

The Darling river Run is gaining popularity and has many stop overs to offer. Starting up at Brewarrina and taking in all the great towns and the Farm Stays right along the Darling, and even a few detours along the way to Wentworth. When you make it to Wilcannia, take a day to slip up to White Cliffs, an hours easy drive, you’ll love it.

There’s the Long Paddock Run, from Moama to Wilcannia, and again taking in all the towns and an odd Farm Stay along the way. So, rest up at Warrawong or Victory Park and again White Cliffs is close by.

If they don’t suit why not try from Wentworth to Tibooburra, The Silver City Highway, tarred all the way. Make sure you call in to Coomba Roadhouse, Broken Hill of course, that’s a few days stop by the time you visit Silverton, out to Mt. Gipps Resort, and check out the Flying Doctor’s Base. Then drop in to Mia at Packsaddle, don’t miss the turn to Milparinka, there’s more planes than cars at the pub! Tell Mavis I sent you at the Tibooburra Store, it’s a fantastic little town.
