Australia Day Awards

Puddin Bugmy and Jordan Martin were the joint winners in the Young Australian of the Year Award for Wilcannia. Citizen of the year was Chris Elliott and the Event of the Year was the NAIDOC Ball.

Australian Day celebrations were smaller this year in Wilcannia, with around 50 people attending the family fun afternoon at the swimming pool.

Instead of the traditional gum boot throwing, swimming races were held for the children. Prizes, some of which were donated by former shire employee Joy Walker who sent down a large collection of small prizes. The most popular were the pencil cases in football team colours.

The gate prize of 3 small electrical items was won by Rashaun Harris-Wilson. The prize was courtesy of Central Darling Shire Council Australia Day grant and Patrick Cunningham at the Liberty Roadhouse.

Organisers would like to thank Jim   , new principal for St. Thereses, Sandra Bradley, new Central School Principal and her husband “JB” for their help on the day. It is inspiring to see new comers to our town step up and contribute to community activities.

Does the electorate of Murray Darling need to be made bigger?

The NSW Electoral Commission is set to conduct a redistribution of Electoral districts, John Williams The Nationals Member for Murray-Darling said.

Key dates for the 2013 Redistribution are as follows:

  • Monday 4 February 2013 – Opening of suggestions and Public hearing in Sydney
  • Wednesday 6 March 2013 – Deadline for suggestions
  • Wednesday 20 March 2013 – Deadline for comments on suggestions.

'The Redistribution process is governed by legislation and in NSW takes place after every two State elections or if more than one quarter of electoral districts differ from the average voters by more or less than 5% for more than two months. Redistributions cannot commence later than one year prior to the next general election (which will be held in March 2015) when the new boundaries from this distribution process will come into effect,' Mr Williams said.

Advice for parents about computer games

On 1 January 2013, new law about computer games commenced.

The new law places obligations on anyone selling, advertising or demonstrating R 18+ computer games, as well as parents/guardians and young people aged 15-17 years. There are significant financial penalties for breach of these laws.

A “minor” in this article means a person under 18 years of age.
As at the date of this article, every $110 is equal to one penalty unit.

New offences for R 18+ computer games
Under the NSW Classification Act, it is an offence:

1. for a person to sell or deliver to a minor a computer game classified R 18+ (or an unclassified computer game that would, if classified, be classified R 18+), unless the person is a parent or guardian of the minor. Maximum penalty: $11,000 for an individual. $22,000 penalty units for a corporation (section 30(1A)). Note: defences available.

Mayor positive about the future

The Mayor of Central Darling Shire Council, Councillor Ray Longfellow, said he has been encouraged by comments in two recent addresses to Council regarding its financial performance and what is emerging as a challenging yet very positive outlook for the future of the Shire.

Loss of $614,000 for 2012: The first of these was a report and address to Council on its financial results for the year ended 30 June 2012 which, although generally favourable, expressed strong concerns about a decline in its cash position.
