Rain, planes and roads

Hello everyone,

Well, the “paper planes” didn’t fly in Wilcannia last week, would you believe the ground was too wet at the venue. It does happen in Wilcannia!

A lot of travellers had to rearrange their travel plans too with the welcome rain. So hope you all can get to your destinations this week, with sunny days and a bit of wind the roads are drying out really well.

Check the Central Darling Shire Road Report, they cover pretty well all roads in the far west area.

Now, what’s on, well the big event is on at Milparinka, their annual Gymkhana see the flyer attached. The road will surely be open by then so go enjoy yourself.

Then the next weekend, if you are near Broken Hill the Community Markets are happening on the 11th. 8 AM till 2PM. Stock up your frig. etc. and if you are around White Cliffs, then Robin Taylor is holding an “Art Workshop” on the 11th. and 12th. The people up there will look after you.

Again if you are heading to the “inside country” then take in the Aberdeen Highland Games, there’s something different for you. You’ll have to be there next Saturday or you’ll miss out.

Don’t forget, the school kids in Menindee are doing Afternoon tea for you all at the Beyond Cafe, every Sunday in July. Home cooked goodies, support them if you’re within a bull’s roar of the place.

"Paper Planes” at the Police Stn

Good morning everyone,

What a pleasant surprise this week, we had Greg and Lily Martin drop into Miss Barrett’s. Actually said they came to see us via Alice Springs! And they did too!! Well, in a sort of a way.

Just not a lot on the drawing board this week. I think all the rain has steadied activities up somewhat. But what great rain it was for the country. And speaking of rain, me thinks there is a trifle coming again on about Wednesday, so be really careful of dirt roads. It takes very little rain on them now to put you in all sorts of trouble.

Talking to a couple today who headed from Menindee to Wilcannia last week and just scraped through to the safety of a red sand hill. There they stayed for a few relaxing days!! A good samara ton property owner nearby came down with some “goodies” bless him, that’s the outback for you.

Now, what we do have on this week is the movie “Paper Planes” at the Police Stn. here in Wilcannia, as I said last week, BBQ at 6-30 Wednesday night followed by the movie, all free.

Then if you’re up around Bourke, there’s the “Women’s Weekend” on up there. 26th./28th. all welcome, and you can, catch up with a campoven cook-up with Andrew and Sarah and some poetry thrown in. Tues. and Thurs. nights.

Dirt road conditions

Hello everyone,

Now, first and foremost, we seem to have some rain coming through. From the best sources I can find, it’s going to be plenty to put all dirt roads OUT starting today! They (and THEY know everything) are talking up to 50 to 80 points or even more, depending on your location. So please be careful, button down, amuse yourself etc.

Don’t seem to have much advance on my email last Monday as far as activities are concerned. My apologies to Kathy at Balranald too, bit too short notice Kathy. However she tells me there are tours going on to Yanga and Mungo National Parks, so if you’re in the Balranald area go in to the Info. Centre and Kathy will do the rest for you. (dirt roads remember!).

That “Wild wacky Women” show I was telling you about, well I’ve discovered it’s on at White Cliffs on Thursday as well as Ivanhoe on Saturday. So there you go, worth seeing for sure.

If you are anywhere around Wilcannia the next week, and you enjoy a good movie, well would you believe we have “Paper Planes” showing at the Police Stn. on Wednesday 24th. Free BBQ provided from 6-30 till 7-30 PM followed by the movie. Supposed to be one of the best, see you there.

School holidays coming up once again, so there will be some National Park tours on as I said above. I believe the road out to Peerie Lake is now open if you are in the White Cliffs area. However the facilities are not complete and we need a river down to put water in the lake.

Field Day great success, Duck Creek races, plus

Hello everyone,

Without sounding a bit ‘trumpet blowing’ our Field Day yesterday was really great. Many thanks to all those who stopped over for the day. One couple came all the way from Geelong, just for the day, what an effort. Anyway, great Field day, Driver Reviver had heaps through and hope all other events over the weekend were also successful.

Lots of travellers on the move at the moment, and from all parts of the country. SO, if any of you are going anywhere near Menindee, you must check out the “Wild, wacky, wonderful Women”, on in Menindee, at the hall, 13th. next Saturday. Be there 9-30 to 3-30, all welcome and free! If you miss it there’s a repeat at Ivanhoe, that’s on the 20th. same set up, all welcome and free.

The next Saturday, the 27th. is the Duck Creek Races, if you’re not a racing fan then you’ll still meet some really nice people, top day out.

That takes us through to the end of the month. I’ll have July’s agenda for you soon, and word to hand is, a group of enthusiastic people are getting a “Rodeo/Gymkhana” organised for Ivanhoe. This is happening on 26/27th.Sept. So start thinking about that, and Tammie McMasters will gladly give you all the details on 0429049633.

Wilcannia Field and Fun Day, etc.

Hello everyone,

Spoke to Fen last night, and although the rain dampened the numbers, the Camerons Corner festivities were a great success. He praised the young people up there for their efforts, well done.

Seems we are changing from rain to cold weather this week, definitely need the winter attire. As our local ABC presenter said just then, “we’ll be sick of winter by mid week!”

It’s all happening in Wilcannia this weekend. As I said, when that road has dried out, poke on to the Warrawong Caravan Park and settle in for our “Field and Fun Day” next Sunday 7th. You’ll need a coat and we will do the rest. (programme attached}, something for all. If you have to travel through and keep on the road then we have a nice hot coffee for you next Saturday, Sunday and Monday at our Driver Reviver site beside the oval.

Enough about us, if you happen to be wandering about White Cliffs this week then Robin Taylor has Art and Craft lessons up there on Tuesday, and there’s Craft girls getting together at The Red Earth Cafe on Friday, go have a chat.

So you can plan your trip, we have the following,

13th. in Menindee, Wild Wacky, Wonderful Women, 9-30 to 3-30, all day! All welcome. And they’re doing it again in Ivanhoe on the 20th. try and be there.
